What I was trying for was…

Every time something doesn’t go according to plan we have an explanation, some mitigating circumstance, further illumination of the situation.  And we tell ourselves that this is so we can learn and do things differently next time. That is as may be, but I’m finding it much more likely that it is because we cannot bear to say the most concise, truthful, naked fact of all:

I made a mistake.
